This very nice cosmetic dermatologist came to my office wondering what could be done to close the spaces between her teeth. She had been to an orthodontist but didn’t want to go through the time and expense of orthodontic therapy. Her orthodontist had also told her that if the spaces were closed with composite bonding material the teeth would look too wide.
We closed the spaces with composite bonding material and our patient was very happy. It should be noted that these cases are not easy. I have been doing cosmetic composite enhancements for years and it took a great deal of study and practice in order to achieve excellent results. It’s like being a sculpturing artist of the mouth. And be aware that patients can be fickle when it comes to cosmetic results. It’s a subjective area of dentistry and a dentist must approach this with patience and a good idea of exactly what the patient requires. In this case I had done a mock up by placing composite on the teeth without first etching. This gave the patient an opportunity to see expected results.
